It's totally underrated.. Maybe it's just me that I felt it was awesome. But it's one of the few or rather I can count, the 3rd or 4th anime that made me cried. And one of the anime that made me cried twice and almost in tears a few moments within the whole series.
Well, if anyone has watched Seirei no Moribito, the style of writing for the story is almost the same but as this is targetted for children, lots of violence has been censored. Kemono no Souja Erin is by the same novelist as Seirei no Moribito. I would love to read the novels from the novelist, Uehashi Naoko. To me, she wrote wonderful stories. And thank god that the popular novels from her has been animated for me to get a chance to know her works (By the way, I'm not a book person).
After catching the series for almost a year since it was released as a winter 2009 anime, I would said that it was worth catching. It has to be the 1st in my list for the anime I've been watching throughout the year.
The story pace was good and all for me, although at certain parts it's really slow and I got annoyed by the repeated scenes being used. I guess for a child point of view, a few recaps are needed to let them feel and relate and follow on the story well. The way of violence is being animated in folklore/tribal style of drawings are unique to me. Despite its simplicity to the character drawings, I grew in love to most of the characters. I guessed that the reason I cried for the show. I think my last cry for an anime was for Dennou Coil, the cyber dog, Densuke T_T.
I would not like to spoil the introduction of the story so I like Wiki do the job.
